Shakespeare's beloved comedy of tricks!

After years of war, an idyllic Italian town is finally back in bloom. But young lovers Claudio and Hero, and sparring singletons Beatrice and Benedick, soon discover that all is not as it seems in their beautiful surrounds as they become entangled in a series of mischievous games, pranks and plots.

The scenic design for this outdoor production capitalized on the sunset through the trees behind a series of fabric banners to project natural forest shadows that shifted subtly throughout the evening. The banners themselves essentialized a country manner house into two life-sized layers hung between trees. I wanted to use the scale of a large estate without building real buildings, playing with color themes to highlight the comedy, and the dark undertones around Don John.
